This well - known holiday film, which is based on the funny works of novelist Jean Shepherd, centres on the arctic adventures of young Ralphie Parker, who spends most of his time escaping bullies and daydreaming about receiving a "Red Ryder air weapon" for Christmas. Ralphie fights to get to Christmas Day with his glasses and his hopes unbroken, frequently at odds with his irritable father but consoled by his adoring mother.
