A recent recruit to the U.S. Navy named Zack Mayo has a negative attitude. When he enrolls in the Aviation Academy, Sgt. Emil Foley's harsh leadership confronts him, giving Zack a rude awakening in terms of interacting with others. Zack learns some hard lessons and determines what he really wants out of life with the help of Foley and an unexpected romance with Paula, an outsider who hangs around the military installation.
