Two tenacious young runners prepare for the 1924 Paris Olympics in the class - obsessed, religiously divisive United Kingdom of the early 1920s. Devout Christian Eric Liddell, who was raised by Scottish missionaries in China, regards running as a form of worshipping God's glory and forbids himself from practising or competing on the Sabbath. In his relentless pursuit, Harold Abrahams triumphs over prejudice towards Jews and those of lower socioeconomic status but neglects his beloved Sybil.
