When Evelyn Mulwray hires Los Angeles private detective J.J. "Jake" Gittes to look into her husband's activities, he thinks it's just another standard adultery case. When Jake meets the actual Mrs. Mulwray and realises he was recruited by a fraud, his investigation quickly turns from routine to anything but normal. Gittes embarks on a complicated investigation into corruption, duplicity, and dark family secrets as a result of Mr. Mulwray's abrupt death because Evelyn's father is now a suspect.
