Arnie Cunningham, an unpopular nerd, purchases a 1958 Plymouth Fury and gives it the name Christine. Arnie begins to have an unhealthy preoccupation with the car, much to Dennis Guilder's dismay. Buddy Repperton, the bully, defaces Christine, and the car repairs itself to immaculate shape before starting to kill Buddy and his buddies. Leigh Cabot, the girlfriend of Dennis and Arnie, decides to destroy Christine in an effort to halt the deaths.
