A friendly alien that has become trapped on Earth is discovered by a young boy named Elliott and made friends with. Elliott brings the alien inside his suburban California home and shows it to his brother and his younger sister, Gertie. The kids decide to keep the creature's existence a secret. But soon E.T. becomes ill, forcing government intervention and placing Elliott and the alien in a dangerous scenario.
