Rose Arbuthnot and Lottie Wilkins, two married British women, choose to take a break from their respective husbands and stay at a castle in Italy for a peaceful vacation. Caroline Dester, a young socialite, and Mrs. Fisher, an elderly aristocrat, join the women. The four ladies, freed from their regular routines, settle into life in rural Italy, and each discovers that the experience has changed her.
