Robert Dupea chooses to lead a working-class life, spending time with his waitress lover Rayette while working in a California oil field, in contrast to his well-educated upper-class past as a classical pianist. But when Robert learns that his father is seriously ill, he decides that he wants to visit his estranged family in Washington. When he travels with Rayette, the two trajectories of his life come to an uneasy crossroads.
