Wayne Szalinski's experimental shrink ray miniaturises kids who break into his lab upstairs to retrieve a lost baseball. When Szalinski gets home, he destroys the machine—which he perceives to be a failure—and throws it out with the children. The four kids, who are now 1/4 inch tall, must make it back to the house while navigating a yard where sprinklers cause dangerous storms and common ants rush like elephants.
