Police chief Martin Brody wants to close the beaches after a young lady is killed by a shark while skinny-dipping close to the New England tourist destination of Amity Island, but mayor Larry Vaughn overrides him out of concern that the loss of visitor dollars will bankrupt the community. When veteran ship captain Quint and ichthyologist Matt Hooper agree to assist Brody in capturing the killer beast, the group engages in a titanic struggle between man and nature.
