Two mismatched Los Angeles police officers named Riggs and Murtaugh pursue and harass South African traffickers. However, because the South Africans have diplomatic immunity, their commander assigns the two to witness protection duty in an effort to keep his job. The difficulty only really begins when this witness tells them that he has already dealt with the smugglers.
