Oliver Barrett IV, a wealthy Harvard University law student, and Jenny Cavilleri, a middle-class student of music at Radcliffe College, fall in love at first sight. The young couple gets married in spite of Oliver's father's objections. When it is learned that Jenny has a terminal illness, their joyful life falls apart. Oliver finds work at a law company in New York City. They work together to make the best of the circumstances.
