Max travels the post - apocalyptic highways of the Australian outback after exacting revenge for the murder of his wife and small son at the hands of a ruthless gang boss, evading attacks by nomadic tribes that prey on outsiders. Max accidentally stumbles into an encampment run by the generally placid Pappagallo. At first, he plots to steal their oil, but soon he reluctantly steps up to defend the community from the enormous Humungous and his bloodthirsty marauders.
