The Italian soldiers initially think the area is abandoned as they wash up on a Greek island after the Allies sink their ship. The troops acquire the trust of the villagers and gradually integrate into the community after learning that the islanders had been hiding. Italians on the island, especially Lt. Raffaele Montini, start to forget about the war as they settle into a peaceful life and pursue romance with the attractive local women.
