Hendrik Hoefgen longs for the spotlight. He has been toiling away in small - town theatres for years, so when the Nazi party practically promises to make him a star, he doesn't hesitate. Hendrik takes great pride in his accomplishments and enjoys receiving great roles and lots of accolades. He has aspirations of portraying Mephisto in the future and, in doing so, carelessly ignores the serious moral dilemma that his circumstances present.
