A Polish official sends a few workmen from Warsaw to London on holiday visas to help him redecorate his new flat there at a lower cost. Since only their foreman, Nowak, speaks English among the crew, he is the only one to find out that Poland's Solidarity movement has just been crushed. Nowak, worried that it will be impossible to get back home, keeps his gang in the dark and starts a string of small - time crimes to keep them all in the black.
