The elderly David "Noodles" Aaronson, who had a career in the criminal underworld in the 1920s and 1930s, comes back to New York in 1968. He feels his history is still open even if most of his former pals, including his longtime boyfriend Max, have passed away. A journey marked by violence, betrayal, and regret is followed by Noodles as he grows from a tough boy in a Jewish slum in New York City's Lower East Side to bootlegger and ultimately Mafia boss.
