Randle Patrick McMurphy anticipates a less constrictive setting when he is moved for evaluation from a prison farm to a mental hospital. However, the martinet Nurse Ratched rules the psychiatric ward with an iron fist, intimidating her patients with verbal abuse, drugs, and electroconvulsive therapy treatments. All of the patients on the ward soon feel the effects of the power struggle between the disobedient McMurphy and the rigid Ratched.
