Conrad Jarrett, an outcast youngster, makes an attempt at suicide when his older brother Buck dies in a sailing accident as a result of guilt. With the aid of his psychiatrist, Dr. Berger, Conrad tries to deal with his mental suffering while also reestablishing contact with his mother, Beth, who has turned cold and hostile, and his emotionally wounded father, Calvin, after spending a prolonged period of time in a psychiatric hospital.
