Governor Wallace gives Sheriff Pat Garrett the go-ahead to pursue the outlaw Billy the Kid because the cattle industry wants him apprehended. Billy and Garrett are longtime friends, but the lawman must uphold his duty. Garrett and his deputies struggle mightily to apprehend Billy, who is exceedingly shrewd. Billy is also helped along the way by Alias, a mystery stranger with a knife.
