Dr. Louis Creed relocates his family to Maine, where he meets Jud Crandall, a nice local. Crandall counsels Louis to inter the Creeds' cat, which was unintentionally killed, close to the former pet cemetery. The cat comes back to life with a negative personality alteration. Despite Crandall's cautions and visions of a previous patient, Louis decides to bury his son Gage's remains in the same spot once the youngster passes away tragically.
