The movie was produced in the vein of Italian neorealism; the young actors were found in the streets and essentially played themselves. In 1987, Pixote, an 11 - year - old boy, was slain by police gunshots after returning to the streets. There were cruel guards who would torture and kill the young detainees while he was a juvenile offender. Along with another prisoner Lilica and her partner Dito, Pixote was able to escape. As soon as he finds himself on Rio de Janeiro's streets, he starts using drugs, prostitution, and crime.
