Austin Millbarge and Emmett Fitz - Hume take the test for a CIA spy programme in an effort to escape their boring government employment. The fresh recruits are attacked by Soviet forces in Afghanistan after being selected right away by the obnoxious Gen. Sline to participate in a top - secret mission in the Middle East. The unfortunate couple's role as a ruse to reveal the Russians ahead of a Cold War nuclear clash becomes quickly apparent.
