The motley former crew of the USS Enterprise, who are exiled on the planet Vulcan, hijack a starship after receiving a distress signal from Earth: a space probe has orbited the planet, shut down worldwide power, and drained the oceans. In order to retrieve extinct humpback whales that Spock believes will speak with the probe and send it away from Earth, Captain Kirk, Spock, and the other officers go back in time.
