The stern assistant of a mysterious client engages surveillance specialist Harry Caul to follow young couple Mark and Ann. Caul and his companion Stan follow the pair across Union Square in San Francisco and manage to record a secret discussion between them. Caul becomes fixated on the resulting tape in an effort to ascertain whether the marriage is in danger as a result of his tormenting memories of a past case that went horribly wrong.
