Joseph Merrick is found by Dr. Frederic Treves at a sideshow. Merrick, who was disfigured as a result of a congenital condition, makes a career as the "Elephant Man." Treves invites Merrick into his home after learning that despite his gruff exterior, Merrick has a sophisticated soul and can impart respect to the stuffy British upper elite of the era. Before passing away at the age of 27, Merrick becomes the talk of London and wins over an adoring actress.
