Paul Edgecomb walked the mile while carrying numerous drawbacks. He had never met somebody like John Coffey, a large black man who had been found guilty of viciously killing two young sisters. Coffey was large and strong enough to murder anyone even if he lacked the disposition. In addition to his fear of the dark and his naïve simplicity, Coffey seemed to possess a tremendous, magical gift. Paul began to question whether Coffey was actually to blame for the murders of the two girls.
