Navy lifers Billy Buddusky and Mule Mulhall are tasked with escorting sailor Larry Meadows to his eight-year prison term in New Hampshire from Virginia. Along the way, they get fond of their prisoner and indulge him in tiny ways, such as taking him on visits to his mother's house and a brothel. Their affection for Larry makes it more difficult for them to carry out their orders as they approach their destination.
