The Greasers, an adolescent gang in rural Oklahoma, and its rivals, the Socials, are always at conflict with one another. The guys are forced to go into hiding when a fight between Greasers Ponyboy and Johnny results in the death of a Social member. Ponyboy, Johnny, fierce Dallas, and their other Greaser friends will soon have to deal with the repercussions of their violent lifestyles. While some Greasers attempt to change, others suffer disastrous outcomes.
