Thelma, a meek housewife, goes fishing for a brief time with her friend Louise, a free - spirited waitress. However, when Louise shoots and kills a man who attempted to rape Thelma in a club, their vacation turns into a flight from the law. Thelma decides to flee with Louise to Mexico. Thelma develops a crush on J.D, a hot young thief, while travelling. Detective Slocumb, who is sympathetic, tries to persuade the two women to turn themselves in before their fates are decided.
