Actor Michael Dorsey, from New York, is a gifted perfectionist who is so demanding of both himself and others that his agent is unable to get work for him any longer. Michael reinvents himself as actress Dorothy Michaels and lands the role after a disastrous soap opera audition. What was supposed to be a temporary position becomes a long - term commitment, but when Michael falls for Julie, a cast member, problems arise that could derail everything.
