President Ulysses S. Grant instructs Civil War hero James West and U.S. Marshal Artemus Gordon to arrest evil inventor Dr. Arliss Loveless after learning of his plot to assassinate him. Although the intellectual Gordon and West's personalities don't always blend well, they are able to get along. And West and Gordon get closer to Loveless with the aid of an enigmatic visitor.
